Ajai Wildlife Reserve is one of Uganda’s lesser-known but historically significant protected areas, offering a unique wilderness experience along the western bank of the Nile. The area was first established in 1962 as a White Rhino Sanctuary and later gazetted as Ajai Game Reserve in 1965. Covering approximately 148 km², the reserve lies between Pakwach and Nimule, east-south-east of Arua, at an altitude ranging from 700 to 1,000 metres.

The reserve is characterized by a fascinating combination of the Nile River, the Ala and Acha tributaries, seasonal riverine swamps, islands, savanna woodland, open grasslands, and forest patches. Ajai Island, formed through the gradual deposition of soil carried by the Ala River, provides an important refuge for wildlife, particularly during the dry season when surrounding areas become less productive.

Ajai supports a variety of wildlife, including Uganda kob, hartebeest, bushbuck, waterbuck, hippopotamus, baboons, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The reserve also provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature exploration within its diverse habitats.

Historically, Ajai was renowned for its northern white rhinoceros population. Unfortunately, the rhinos have not been recorded in the reserve since the 1979 war and are believed to have disappeared from the area. Today, conservation efforts remain important, particularly because the reserve’s relatively small size allows wildlife to move into surrounding areas where they face threats such as poaching. Despite these challenges, Ajai remains a remarkable destination for discovering Uganda’s natural heritage and exploring an authentic, off-the-beaten-path wilderness.
